At least one person was killed and 27 others injured after the shrine of Nura Pagla, also known as Nura Paglar Darbar, in Goalanda upazila of Rajbari district was vandalised and set ablaze, allegedly by members of Islamist parties and groups, on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Md Rasel Molla, 28, son of Azad Member from Pochajut Mistipara under Debgram union.
He succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Rajbari deputy commissioner Sultana Akter confirmed the death to ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, stating that she was informed by the police.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing release said, ‘The interim government strongly condemned the abhorrent desecration of the grave and the vile torching of the body of Nurul Haque Molla, also knows as Nura Pagla’.
‘This inhuman and despicable act is a direct affront to our values, our laws and the very fabric of a just and civilised society,’ the release said.
‘Such acts of barbarity will not be tolerated under any circumstances,’ it said.
It further said that the perpetrators of this heinous crime would be identified and brought to justice with the full force of the law.
The attackers reportedly exhumed the body of Nurul Haque Molla, widely known as Nura Pagla, a self-proclaimed Imam Mahdi claimant, before setting it on fire.
Nurul Haque died on August 23.
According to Sultana Akter, the attack was carried out after Friday prayers under the banner of Tawhidi Janata, involving Islamist political parties.
At least 23 devotees of Nura Pagla and five police personnel were injured in the attack.
The police suffered minor injuries. Among the devotees, 19 were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, while three others received primary treatment, said the deputy commissioner.
She said that tensions had been escalating in the area since Nura Pagla’s burial on August 23.
His grave, constructed about 12 feet above the ground and draped in a cloth resembling the kiswah (covering of the Kaaba in Makkah), had drawn repeated protests from Islamist groups.
The protesters had issued an ultimatum demanding the relocation of the grave by the night of September 4.
However, the deceased’s family and followers ignored the threat.
‘As announced, the protesters held a rally after Jumma prayers. When police attempted to stop them, they attacked law enforcement with sticks, batons, and hammers, before proceeding to vandalise and set fire to the shrine. They also burnt the exhumed body of Nura Pagla,’ said the deputy commissioner.
Authorities have launched an investigation, and additional security has been deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
