To resolve the long-standing waterlogging problem of Chattogram city, the Chittagong Port Authority is conducting regular dredging activities in various canals under its jurisdiction, including the Karnaphuli Navigation Channel.
Through these activities, navigability is being increased, plastic and non-biodegradable waste floating in canals and drains is being removed and water flow is being maintained, said a press release on Friday.
The CPA is carrying out the work of removing waste from various canals connected to the Karnaphuli River, especially Rajakhali Canal, Chaktai Canal and other canals in Chattogram city, on its own initiative and funding.
Already, the depth of the Rajakhali Canal has been reduced to 2–3 metres by removing soil and waste, and uninterrupted water flow from the canal to the river has been ensured, mentioned the press release.
The port authority has been tackling the waterlogging problem for a long time by dredging the main channel of the Karnaphuli River and removing waste from the canals.
Currently, by deploying modern equipment, including grab dredgers through a contracting company, it is possible to ensure the normal flow of water inside the canal by dredging the front of the canal and ensuring the navigability of the canal.
This is playing a positive role in reducing waterlogging in the city. This process is ongoing, as a result of which the water used by the city is flowing into the river without any hindrance.
The Chittagong Port Authority is seeking the cooperation of the city residents to fill these activities, calling on them to collectively come forward to solve the waterlogging problem of the port city by developing the habit of throwing waste in designated dustbins instead of throwing waste directly into canals, drains, rivers and drains.   Â
