A Dhaka court on Friday put a man on one-day remand in an attempted murder case over the attack on the Shohagh Paribahan counter at Malibagh in the capital on Wednesday night.

The accused placed on remand was Md Parvez, while another accused Joynal Abedin was sent to jail.


The court of the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Partha Bhadra issued the order after the accused were presented in court as case investigation officer Mostafizur Rahman requested five-day remand for Md Parvez.

Ramna police officer-in-charge Golam Faruk told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that accused Parvez and Zainal were identified from video footage and were arrested on Thursday.

Operations were ongoing to apprehend all the attackers, he also said.

At least seven people, including a brother of Shohagh Paribahan owner, were stabbed during the attack allegedly led by Billal Hosain, Dhaka city Ward 19 unit’s former convener and former president of Swechchhasebak Dal, associated to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Following the incident, Billal has been expelled from the BNP’s primary membership for life.

Shohagh Paribahan security officer Dewan Md Al Amin filed a case with the Ramna police on Thursday afternoon against 18 named people, including Billal, and another 18–20 unnamed individuals.

A video circulated on the social media after the attack showed that two individuals standing outside the Shohagh Paribahan office at 11:07pm on Wednesday.

Shortly afterwards, a bunch of men armed with machetes, knives and iron rods launched the attack.

They also vandalised the ticket counters, assaulted a staff member, and looted bundles of cash from the drawers, while several people who came with the attackers were seen clapping and cheering.

According to the case statement, accused Akash and Rumon, who were identified as the two men visible in the viral video, were smoking near the ticket counters. They angrily reacted when three Shohagh Paribahan employees asked them to move away and smoke elsewhere.

The two men then made phone calls and shortly afterwards the attackers appeared in the scene with sharp weapons and launched their onslaught.

Later, the other accused armed with sharp weapons led by Billal smashed the glass of the security guard’s room in front of the garage of the Shohagh Paribahan owner’s house.

During the attack, Shohagh Paribahan owner’s brother Ali Hasan Talukdar, his driver Masud, and other employees were repeatedly stabbed, according to the case statement.

The attackers vandalised two ticket counters, causing damage worth Tk 5,00,000, and looted Tk 17,570 from ticket sales.
