The police filed four murder cases with the Gopalganj sadar police station on Saturday night against 5,400 unnamed people over the killings in July 16 violence in Gopalganj town centring the National Citizen Party rally.

Four cases were filed under the Penal Code 147, 148, 149, 186, 353, 307, 302 and 34, according to Gopalganj sadar police inspector for investigation Abdullah Al Mamun.


At least five people were killed in the clash between activists of the Bangladesh Awami League, its front organisations and security forces over an attack on an NCP rally.

Gopalganj sadar police sub-inspector Ayub Ali filed a case against 800-900 unnamed people over the killing of Ramjan Kazi, 17, sub-inspector Shahim Hossain filed a case against 1400-1500 unnamed people over the killing of Dipta Saha, 27,  SI Abul Kalam Azad filed a case against 1400-1500 unnamed people over the killing of Sohel Rana, 30 and SI Mizanur Rahman filed a case against 1400-1500 unnamed people over the killing of Emon Talukder, 17, according to the police.

‘The unnamed people accused in the four cases had been mentioned as miscreants,’ inspector Abdullah Al Mamun told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Sunday.

Ramjan Munshi, 32, a rickshaw puller and a resident of Thana Para, Gopalganj town, son of Akbar Munshi, who sustained a bullet injury in the July 16 clash, died at about 1:45am on July 18 while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Of the five victims, an autopsy of only Ramjan Munshi was conducted at the DMCH morgue, while the government claimed that four bodies of the deceased in Gopalganj clash were taken away by a group of unruly people from the Gopalganj District Hospital at about 7:30pm on July 16.

The families of the victims later denied the allegations of the government and told the media that the hospital authority did not take any action to conduct autopsies.
