
Two Iranian nationals came under a mob attack in the Basundhara residential area in the capital Dhaka Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of being members of a dope gang.
They sustained injuries in the mob beating and the mob vandalised their car when they tried to flee the scene on the vehicle at about 3:00pm on the day, according to police.
The injured Iranian nationals are Parvez Ahmed, 78, and his grandson Mehedi Zaban, 18. They entered Bangladesh on February 27 and March 1.
Vatara police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mazharul Islam said that they had taken two Iranian persons in the police custody after giving them primary treatment at a nearby hospital.
‘We could not understand the language of the two Iranian nationals as they know neither English nor Bangla. We have informed their embassy about them,’ the OC said.
He said, ‘Embassy officials have already visited the police station.’
An official of the Embassy of Islamic Republic of Iran in Dhaka told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that neither the police nor the government of Bangladesh officially reported to the mission about the incident of mob attack on their citizens until about 10:00pm.
A video footage showing a mob comprising over a hundred people vandalising the car in the incident, went viral on social media.
Incidents of mob attacks and harassments have recently increased in an alarming way.
The advisory council on Tuesday discussed the recent incidents of mob attacks and harassments, especially a mob attack at Mohammadpur in the capital Dhaka.
Rights body Ain o Salish Kendra in its monthly updates revealed that at least 112 people were beaten to death in the past six months from August 2024 to January 2025 with at least 16 recorded in the first month of this year.
The ASK yearly report revealed that 128 people were beaten to death in 2024, 51 in 2023, 36 in 2022, 28 in 2021, and 35 in 2020.
