Panic gripped Dhaka residents on Thursday amid reports of robberies and theft across the city in the past two days.

City dwellers reported multiple robbery incidents in the Mohammadpur, Jigatola, Uttara, Mirpur, and Dhanmondi areas.

Announcements were made by loudspeakers in mosques in many areas, asking residents to remain alert.

However, residents of various areas have remained vigilant on the streets at night to ensure security in the absence of law enforcers since Sheikh Hasina resigned amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5.

People from all walks of life came out of their houses and patrolled their respective areas with sticks in hand to provide security throughout the night.

A number of videos were shared on Facebook, requesting assistance from robbery attacks in various parts of the capital.

Al-Amin Sourav, a resident at Mirpur-6, said that they could not sleep at night as Baitul Fallah Jame Masjid announced the robbery attacks.

‘We patrolled the area with sticks to prevent robbery till morning,’ he told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.

In some of the places, army personnel fended off such attempts, while in many areas, local residents got united to fight off the robbers and patrol their areas.

An army officer, who was on duty at ECB Chattar and its nearby areas, early Thursday, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that there was more fear among residents than actual robbery incidents.

The robbery incidents indeed happened in various areas of the capital, he said.

‘We have detained 10 to 13 robbers while attempting to attack a building in the ECB Chattar area on Wednesday,’ he said, adding that the robbers carried sharp weapons such as knives and machetes while carrying out the attacks.

A resident of the Central Road area told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a group of people attempted to enter our area at about 2:15am on Thursday.

‘Later, the mosque in my area announced that robbers had entered the neighbourhood. The announcement asked people to be alert,’ she said.

Similar announcements have been made in other areas, including Mirpur, Mohammadpur, and Dhanmondi.

The army earlier released helpline numbers for citizens as the police force remained off duty following Hasina’s forced resignation.
