A 51-year old man was beaten to death and another seriously injured in a mob attack on suspicion of robbery in Gazipur on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Hayder Islam of Langadu in Rangamati, and the injured, Al Amin, 25, of Mohirhat in Feni, said Joydebpur police officer-in-charge Touhid Ahmed.
The incident took place at about 4:00am at Nayapara in Gazipur Sadar.
Witnesses said that the area had experienced several incidents of robbery in recent times, prompting residents to organise nighttime patrols.
On Wednesday early morning, the locals became suspicious after seeing Hayder and Al-Amin roaming in the area, than they detained Hayder, while 5-7 others fled from the spot and another one was captured from the Bhorghata later and the locals beat them up.
On information, police rescued them and took them to Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared one of them dead. Touhid said that the local people attacked the two suspects while they were allegedly preparing for robbery in the area.
Hayder is accused in several cases of robbery in different police stations across the country, he added.
