BNP-linked activists entered the Jahangirnagar University election commission office on Wednesday night in violation of electoral rules, hours before the first JU central students’ union polls in 33 years.
Witnesses said BNP activist Maruf Mallik—a former student of the university and a Dhaka Jubo Dal leader—joined a closed-door meeting at the senate building around 9:30pm, though journalists were barred.
At about 10:45pm, JU Chhatra Dal convener Zahir Uddin Mohammad Babor and fellow activist Moshiur Rahman Rozen accompanied officials moving ballot boxes from the office to election centres.
Daily Jaijaidin correspondent Osman Sardar said he filmed the scene before Rozen allegedly seized his phone and deleted the footage.
‘I was recording ballot boxes being moved with Babor and Rozen nearby. Rozen took my phone and deleted the video. I am very worried about tomorrow,’ he said.
According to a JU notice issued on Wednesday, election rules prohibit former students from involvement, but several were seen on campus.
Pro-vice chancellor for administrative affairs Sohel Ahmed said, ‘They came here to consult about some of their complaints. Nothing else.’
The Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union election is set for Thursday, the first such vote in 33 years.
