The High Court on Tuesday directed Jahangirnagar University authorities to allow Amartya Roy Jon to contest the upcoming JUCSU election on September 11 as a vice-president candidate from the Shompritir Oikya panel.

A vacation bench of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Biswajit Debnath issued a stay order on the JUCSU Election Commission鈥檚 decision to cancel Amartya鈥檚 candidacy, which was based on claims that he was not a regular student, having exceeded eight years as a graduate student.

The court also issued a rule asking the university and election commission to explain why excluding his name from the voter list and rejecting his nomination should not be declared illegal.

The court passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Amartya challenging the legality of a notification signed by Chief Election Commissioner Professor Moniruzzaman stated that Amartya Roy, a residential student of AFM Kamaluddin Hall and a student of the Department of Archaeology from the 2017-18 academic session, was declared ineligible to be both a voter and a candidate under Sections 4 and 8 of the JUCSU constitution.

Amartya鈥檚 lawyer, Monjur Al Matin, argued that his client remained a regular student, as the university had previously allowed him to sit for examinations following a High Court directive.

Amartya was earlier banned by the university for allegedly removing a graffiti of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country鈥檚 founding president.
