All candidates in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union elections, scheduled for September 11, will require to go through dope tests.

‘We are going to make dope tests mandatory for all candidates,’ said Mafruhi Sattar, a member of the JUCSU election commission, adding that candidates would be given a short notice period before undergoing the tests at the university medical centre.

Professor Mafruhi told reporters that the tests would be conducted within the next few days.

The move comes following demands from several students and candidates who had urged authorities to ensure that no drug abuser could contest the polls.

Elections to the JUCSU and hall unions are going to be held after a gap of 33 years.

A total of 179 candidates are running for 25 positions, including 10 for vice-president and nine for general secretary.
