A journalist died, reportedly due to a cardiac arrest, while he was covering the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union and hall union elections at Curzon Hall on the university campus on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased, Tarikul Shibli, 40, was a city reporter for Channel S Television, a local satellite television channel. He collapsed while reporting live from Curzon Hall at about 1:30pm, according to his colleagues.
Tarikul, hailed from Cumilla, had been living with his family in the capital’s Uttara area.
Fellow journalist Sohel Rana, who was on the spot, said that Tarikul suddenly lost consciousness during a live broadcast.
He was immediately rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, Sohel said.
DMCH police camp outpost in-charge Md Faruk said that doctors initially suspected cardiac arrest as the cause of the death.
However, the exact cause would be confirmed following an autopsy report, he said, adding that the body was kept at the DMCH mortuary.
