The police arrested a 28-year-old man at a location in Gazipur city Sunday night for his alleged involvement in Saturday’s beating a readymade garment worker to death at his workplace on Kashimpur road under Konabari police station in the city.

The death of Md Hridoy, 19, a mechanic at readymade garment factory Greenland Garments Limited, sparked protest and led to an indefinite closure of the factory since Sunday.

Hridoy, son of Abul Kalam of village Shuktarbaid under Ghatail in Tangail was tortured inside the factory for hours since Saturday morning and was sent to a nearby hospital where he was found dead, the police said.

He was tortured on theft allegation, the police said.

Konabari police station officer-in charge Salah Uddin said that police arrested Hasan Mahmud Mithun, 28, Sunday night in the case of killing Hridoy.

The victim’s elder brother, Liton Mia, filed the case with the police station Saturday night against unidentified individuals, accusing them of planned murder and concealing the body, he said.

On Saturday late afternoon when the news of Hridoy’s death spread in the area, workers of nearby factories gathered in front of the factory alleging that the factory authorities had initially tried to conceal the murder incident.

The protests widened on Sunday after a video of the torture went viral on social media.

On Sunday, around 500 workers blocked the Tangail-Gazipur road for several hours and threw bricks and stones at the Greenland Garments factory, demanding justice for Hridoy.

Amid the protests, the Greenland authorities of Garments Limited locked its all gates and announced an indefinite closure of the factory.

Several photos and videos that went viral on social media showed bloody and dark bruises on Hridoy’s knees, waist, back, wrists, elbows, fingernails, neck, and face, revealing the extent of the torture.

In a video, Hridoy was seen tied with a rope to the window of a factory room, sitting shirtless on a sofa, and writhing in pain.

In a video clipping, the torturers surrounding him there were heard saying, ‘Nothing happened even after so much beating. He is yet to die.’

Another video clipping showed several people dragging Hridoy out of the room while the victim’s hands and feet were bound with rope and one person beside him was holding a wooden stick.

‘He was taken to the hospital. He was brought dead there,’ OC Salah Uddin said.

He said that the police later raided the factory and seized CCTV footage and other evidence from the spot.

He said that several teams of the police were continuing raids at different places to arrest the others involved in the murder.
