Local government, rural development and co-operatives adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan on Wednesday said that the question of ousted Awami League’s participation in elections was irrelevant.

He made the comment while speaking to journalists at a youth festival event at Adamjee Cantonment College in the capital Dhaka.

‘The question of ousted Awami League’s participation in elections is irrelevant until the trial and other issues are resolved,’ said Asif Mahmud, shifting from his Tuesday’s comment regarding AL’s participation in the local body elections.

On Tuesday, Asif Mahmud, also a coordinator of the student-led mass uprising that ousted the autocratic AL regime, said, ‘The people who were with Awami League but did not conduct any injustice and mass killing or are not involved in any crime can return to the mainstream situation again.’

About Tuesday’s comment, he told the journalists that the AL must be eliminated both ideologically and politically through judicial prohibition.

He stated that the process should follow legal and social measures, including truth commissions or similar examples set in other countries.

The student-led mass uprising ousted the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina-led AL on August 5, 2024.
