
German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s one-act play titled ‘Senora Carrar’s Rifle’ was staged in the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to pay tribute to July martyrs on Thursday.
The production, which premiered on Wednesday, was staged jointly by Theatre ULAB and Bodhinatya.
The play has been translated into Bangla by Sukhamay Bose, adapted and directed by Sarwar Jahan Upol while Shibli Sadik Sifat worked as dramaturg.
Set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War, the play is a powerful portrayal of a mother’s struggle, human resilience and anti-war sentiment.
The story revolves around a widowed woman, Teresa Carrar, who yearns to protect her family and yet struggles to balance preserving her beliefs with being swept away by opposing forces.
Swarnalata Zaman, Ankan Dasgupta, Maimuna Nowar Rahman, Syed Sadman Sakib and Masud Parvez Moon, among others, played different characters in the play.
Farhad A Shamim did choreography, Mukhlesur Rahman designed light and Rudmila Chowdhury, Rukaiya Islam, Shaila Kazi, Rumaisa Mehnaz and Syed Sadman Sakib worked as theatre executives in the production.
