At least two buses were set on fire in Gazipur’s Sreepur and Bason areas early Wednesday.
According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters, the first incident occurred around 4:50am in Sreepur, where a parked Banasree Paribahan bus was torched by unidentified assailants. About 20 minutes later, another parked bus belonging to VIP Paribahan was set ablaze in the Bason area.
Fire Service duty officer Rakibul Hasan said firefighters rushed to both spots and extinguished the flames. No casualties were reported, and the causes of the arson attacks are yet to be determined.
Several buses have been torched in Dhaka and other districts since Monday amid a spate of crude bomb explosions that have spread panic among residents.
A bus driver was burned to death early Tuesday when unidentified attackers set fire to a vehicle in the Bhalukjan area of Mymensingh’s Phulbaria upazila.
The arson incidents come days after the banned Awami League announced a so-called ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ on social media for November 13 — the day the International Crimes Tribunal is scheduled to set a date for delivering its verdict in a crimes against humanity case against Awami League president and ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, over atrocities allegedly committed during the July uprising.
