National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Friday said that there was no scope for keeping the ‘notes of dissent’ in the July National Charter 2025.
The order on the July Charter must be issued by chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, he also said.
Nahid made the remarks at an event held at the Poet Shamsur Rahman Auditorium of Bangla Academy in Dhaka, organised to mark the inauguration of the University Teachers Forum, a new platform of university teachers.
‘There will be no notes of dissent in the July Charter. Whatever has been reached through consensus will stay, and the rest of the issues will be decided by the people. If the people want, those decisions will be implemented,’ he said.
Hoping that the country will soon move towards Jatiya Sangsad elections under the legal framework of the July Charter, Nahid said, ‘We will carry forward Bangladesh by upholding the aspirations of the mass uprising.’
Nahid said that all participants of the July mass uprising should be represented in the upcoming parliament, which, he mentioned, would also act as a constitutional reform council.
The parliament will work to draft a new constitution, he said, adding that teachers must be involved in that process and the NCP would try to ensure their participation.
He also said that the upcoming parliament and constitutional reform council would bring together youths, teachers, religious scholars, women, minorities, and professionals from various walks of life to implement the July Charter.
‘But before that there must be a referendum on the current demands. The order on the July Charter must be issued by Professor Muhammad Yunus,’ he added.
Nahid also stressed that a comprehensive reform of the education system was essential for a fundamental transformation of the state, particularly to address unemployment.
He stressed the need for reforms in the education sector and the implementation of necessary changes.
The NCP leader said that the nation would forever remember the contribution of teachers during the July uprising with deep respect.
‘For the past 16 years, promotions for teachers were granted based on party affiliation, leaving a fascist structure still present in Bangladesh,’ he said.
He also said that fascism could not be eradicated without a change in the mindset of individuals and society.
