At least 10 people were injured in a clash between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Markol Sahapukur village under Nachole upazila in Chapainawabganj on Tuesday.
The injured are Monirul Islam, Amirul Islam and his son Tushar Ali, Sharif Ali, Alam Ali, Milon Ali and his son Rabbani, Abdur Rakib, Anwar Hossain, and Ziaur Rahman, all residents of the village and supporters of Abdul Salam Tuhin, a former organising secretary of the district BNP.
Witnesses said that tension had been brewing between the supporters of Salam and those of BNP’s assistant secretary for industries and commerce affairs and former lawmaker Aminul Islam over establishing supremacy in the area, locals and the police said.
Three days ago, Tuhin’s supporters allegedly assaulted several supporters of Aminul, which reportedly led to Tuesday’s retaliation.
On Tuesday, Aminul’s supporters attacked Tuhin’s followers at Markol Sahapukur village, leaving at least 10 people injured, they said.
On information, the police rushed to the scene, brought the situation under control, and sent the injured to the upazila health complex.
Chapainawabganj district BNP convener Golam Zakaria said that supporters of Salam and Tuhin had clashed over campaigning for the upcoming national elections.
Aminul Islam said that the incident occurred over establishing local dominance.
‘It did not happen with anyone’s influence,’ he said, adding two or three similar incidents had occurred in the village earlier.
Nachole police station officer-in-charge Monirul Islam said that police forces were deployed in the area to avert any further untoward incidents.
He said that no case was filed in this connection until 8:00pm.
