The police arrested early Tuesday nine suspects in the robbery of Tk 2.5 crore from garment factory officials impersonating Detective Branch members.
The arrests were made in raids at Savar and places in Dhaka, said Dhaka district Detective Branch additional superintendent Zahid Khan.
On September 25, the suspects allegedly stopped officials of Delicate Garments near Rajfulbaria at Savar, introduced themselves as DB officers and snatched the money, the police officer said.
Investigators later launched a shadow probe into the case filed with Savar Model Police Station, leading to the arrests.
Police recovered Tk 5 lakh in cash, a walkie-talkie, handcuffs, toy guns, uniforms resembling those of the Rapid Action Battalion, and other equipment used in the robbery, Zahid said.
Those arrested are alleged ringleader Shahidul Islam, Sumon Mia, Siddiqur Rahman alias Idris, Afzal Hossain alias Ujjal, Mamun Ahmed Mintu, Mehedi Hasan, Shamim Ahmed Sabuj, Shahadat, and Farhad Hossain.
‘All nine suspects have previous criminal records, including robbery and murder cases’, Zahid Khan said. ‘They were sent to court with a petition for seven days of remand for further interrogation.’
He added that efforts were underway to recover the remaining Tk 2 crore.
