The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the Islami Andolan Bangladesh on Tuesday separately announced the second phase of their parallel 12-day programmes to press home five common demands.

Their key demands are giving legal cover to the July Charter and holding the next national elections in a proportional representation system.

At separate press conferences in Dhaka on Tuesday, the parties unveiled their countrywide programmes.

From October 1 to 9, the parties would conduct mass outreach campaigns, consultations and seminars to build support for their demands.

On October10, the parties would stage processions in Dhaka and all divisional cities, followed by the submission of memorandums to the deputy commissioners across the country on October 12.

The common five-point demands include the implementation of the July Charter before the national elections and holding the next polls in February based on the charter.

Other demands include introducing a proportional representation voting method for parliament seats, ensuring a level-playing field for all political parties, delivering visible progress in prosecuting those responsible for the July 2024 killings, and banning activities of the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance and the alliance members.

Jamaat leaders repeated their call at a press conference at the Al-Falah auditorium at Moghbazar in the capital for the legal recognition of the July Charter through either a constitutional order or a referendum.

Jamaat secretary general Mia Golam Porwar said that the five-point demands had already gained broad public support, adding that failure to address the demands would compel citizens to intensify protests.

At the Islami Andolan’s briefing, secretary general Yunus Ahmad expressed frustration at the government’s failure to respond positively to the ongoing parallel movement.

He criticised the government for appearing indifferent to the public demands, comparing its inaction to that of authoritarian regimes.

In mid-September, four Islamic parties — Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish and Khelafat Majlis — had launched a joint movement for the same five-point demands.

Two other organisations, the Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party and the Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, later agreed to join the campaign.

In the first phase, the parties staged a series of demonstrations, including rallies in Dhaka on September 18, divisional processions on September 19 and district-level marches on September 26.
