The National Citizen Party on Monday called for unity among all communities living in the Chittagong Hill Tracts for the development in the three hill districts.

The party alleged that the 1972 constitution failed to include all communities living in the hills and divisions were created among the people of the country.

NCP convener Nahid Islam made the remarks at a rally in the Khagrachari sadar market area in Khagrachari town as part of the party’s ongoing programmes marking the first anniversary of the July uprising.

‘There is no alternative to unity and harmony among all the communities living in the hills for development here,’ said Nahid.

All communities in the hill districts, including Bengalis and different ethnic communities, are deprived of economic development, education and medical facilities, said Nahid.

He said that all the communities would be benefited if education and medical facilities were developed in the hills.

‘Unity, amity and harmony among all communities are necessary for Bangladesh’s sovereignty, regional integrity and national security,’ Nahid said.

‘We want to build Bangladesh as a country of diverse languages and cultures. Diversity is the strength of a country. But our constitution has denied diversity,’ said Nahid.

The NCP began its national-level march on July 1 from Rangpur by offering prayers for uprising martyr Abu Sayed as part of its July 1- August 5 countrywide programme to mark the first anniversary of the uprising.

A group of student and youth leaders who led the uprising formed the NCP on February 28.

Addressing the rally, Nahid expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the crash of a Bangladesh Air Force FT-7 BGI aircraft on Milestone School and College compound in the capital’s Diabari area.

NCP leaders and activists, including the party’s member secretary Akhter Hossen and chief organiser for North Sarjis Alam, among others, attended the rally.

The party postponed its Monday evening’s rally in Feni and today’s scheduled rallies in Noakhali and Lakshmipur districts due to the crash of the aircraft.

The NCP is scheduled to hold marches in all districts till July 30, demanding trial of the Awami League and its leaders for the massacres during the mass uprising, reforms in various sectors, and a new constitution aiming at building a discrimination-free Bangladesh.
