The Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday sent a letter to the Election Commission recommending legal action against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for providing false information in her election affidavit in 2008.

ACC chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen came up with the information at a press briefing held at the ACC headquarters in the capital’s Segun Bagicha.

He said that the asset declaration submitted by Sheikh Hasina to the EC before the 2008 general election did not align with her income tax returns.

‘The commission has identified significant inconsistencies in the reported asset information analysing the related documents,’ he said.

The ACC has recommended that action be taken under the Representation of the People Order, 1972, for allegedly providing false information in the affidavit.

Noting that there are two components to this issue, ACC chairman said, ‘One part has already been referred to the Election Commission for appropriate legal action.’

‘The second part, which involves inconsistencies between the asset statement in the affidavit and the income tax records, will be addressed directly by the ACC,’ he said adding that a legation action by ACC was under process but it would take some time.
