Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday said that Awami League supporters who were not involved in repressing or obstructing BNP activities could join the BNP.

The BNP leader made the remarks while addressing an event to launch the BNP’s divisional membership renewal and distribution campaign at the party’s Nasimon Bhaban office premises in the Kazir Dewri area in Chattogram city.

‘We must exercise caution when recruiting new members. Individuals with criminal records, extortionists, miscreants, or corrupt figures, and those who could harm our public support should not be included. However, if someone previously supported the Awami League but did not suppress the BNP or acted covertly in our favour, there is no bar for them to join the BNP,’ he said.

Amir Khasru inaugurated the campaign by renewing his own membership and distributing membership form books to BNP leaders from various districts.

He said, ‘This is a significant opportunity for us. BNP is the largest political platform in the country. Now is the time to reinforce it politically and organisationally.’

‘We have already removed Sheikh Hasina. The path is clear, but now we must build a solid organisational base and revive the spirit of the party. That’s the aim of this initiative,’ he said.

Stressing transparency in the membership drive, he said, ‘This process must take place openly, in the light of day, not behind closed doors. Today we are doing it out in the open, and we expect the same to be done across all cities, thanas, and unions. There should be no secrecy in joining the BNP.’

BNP chairperson’s advisor Golam Akbar Khandaker, joint secretary general Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, treasurer and membership renewal committee secretary M Rashiduzzaman Millat, and assistant organising secretary Harunur Rashid Harun also addressed the event as special guests.

BNP Chattogram divisional organizing secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim presided over the event, which was conducted by assistant organising secretary Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin.
