At least 50 people were injured as local leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Awami League clashed at Shantiganj upazila in Sunamganj on Saturday over establishing supremacy in the area.

Local people said that there was a long-standing conflict between the Pashchim Birgaon union BNP president Nur Miah and the same union AL vice-president, Sufi Miah, over establishing supremacy in the area as both of them were residents of Thakurbhog village of the union.

They said that supporters and relatives of Nur Miah organised a programme of distributing sweetmeats among the villagers on Friday afternoon in a field near the Thakurbhog village.

The supporters of Sufi Miah, however, did not come to the programme and they also announced a similar kind of programme at the same place on Saturday morning, which created a commotion among the villagers, the locals said.

Supporters of both the rival sides, meanwhile, made announcements about the programmes using the loudspeakers of the village mosque.

At one stage, the two groups armed with locally made lethal weapons, including bamboo sticks and spears, locked in a clash at around 10:00am in the field near the village, they said.

More than 50 people on both sides were injured in the clash that lasted about an hour.

The injured were admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, the locals said.

Shantiganj police officer-in-charge Akram Ali told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that on information, the police immediately rushed to the spot.

He said that a team of the police was deployed on the spot to avert any untoward incident.

‘One person was also detained from the spot for interrogation,’ the police officer said, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard after receiving complaints.
