A passenger bus was burnt at Pabna Sadar early Saturday allegedly by a former local Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal leader for not paying Tk 20,000 as extortion money.

The incident took place in Shankarpur village under Maligachha union under the sadar upazila.


The bus owner alleged that Ranu Biswas, a former general secretary of Maligachha union Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party demanded Tk 20,000 from him as monthly extortion on Thursday, the bus owner alleged, adding that the former leader burnt the bus after he refused to pay the money.

According to locals and transport workers, Enamul Haque, the owner of the bus named Tamim Travels, kept the bus in front of his house at night.

At around 3:30am, a group of youths on three motorcycles came, and poured petrol on the bus, they said, adding that the youths at one point set the bus on fire and fled the scene.

Former Jubo Dal leader Ranu Biswas told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he was not involved in the incident of burning the bus.

Pabna district Juba Dal convener Himel Rana said, ‘Juba Dal does not tolerate such activities under any circumstances. We will investigate the matter and take organisational action.’

Sanjay Kumar, inspector for investigation of the Pabna police station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he went to the scene on information.

‘The matter is being investigated as to who set the bus on fire at night,’ he said.

Maligachha union parishad chairman Syed Muntaz Alisaid, ‘There is no way to deny that the bus was set on fire.’

Pabna Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Naharul Islam said, ‘Legal action will be taken against those involved in the incident.’
