Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday said that his party would bring back the abolished caretaker government system in the constitution to聽 ensure free and fair elections in the country.
He made the promise while addressing a virtual view-exchanging meeting with grassroots leaders and activists of Khulna division.
鈥楤angladesh is owned by the people of this country. Electing people鈥檚 representatives through free exercise of voting rights is their fair democratic right,鈥 he said.
He said that the BNP, in 1996, introduced 鈥榗aretaker government system鈥 to the constitution to ensure people鈥檚 right to vote.
But, he said, dictator Sheikh Hasina abolished the system in order to grab power and to deprive the people of voting rights.
He said that Hasina deprived the people of their voting rights in national elections for three times.
鈥榃e want to re-establish the 鈥渃aretaker government system鈥 in the constitution to restore the people鈥檚 right to vote,鈥 he said.
He said that BNP did politics in a bid to fulfill the expectations of the common people of the country.
He said that BNP would work to ensure the safety and security of the people, freedom of speech, right to do business and trade in peace, employment of youths, dignity and security for women, ensuring equal rights for all irrespective of religion, caste, tribe, plains and hills, establishing rule of law in the country, and balancing power between the judiciary and the executive branches.
Tarique said that bringing balance of power, ensuring health facilities for all, getting fair prices for agricultural products, and, above all, ensuring the independence and sovereignty of the country were the priorities in BNP politics.
Stating that BNP does not believe in revenge, he said, 鈥楾he people of the country have also been living in a large prison called Bangladesh for the past 17 years. So, we have to set an example by responding to all the injustices of the past by fulfilling the expectations of the people of the country, not by committing violence. We have to set an example by responding to all the injustices in the past.鈥
