
Politicians and professionals on Monday at a commemoration meeting urged the political parties to give the interim government time so that they could restore democratic rule in the country for holding a free, fair and credible general elections.
Barrister Abdus Salam Smriti Sangsad organised the commemoration meeting at the National Press Club in the capital to mark the 25th anniversary of death of former Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Abdus Salam Talukder.
The BNP standing committee member Gayeshar Chandra Roy chaired the meeting.
The BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, a scope had created to restore democratic rule in the country.
‘We should give the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus time for holding a credible general election after some reforms,’ Fakhrul said.
Mirza Fakhrul thanked the students who led the movement against discrimination.
Fakhrul criticised the Indian government for giving deposed Sheikh Hasina shelter in their country and hatching conspiracies against Bangladesh from there.
Nazrul Islam Khan, the BNP standing committee member and also president of Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder Smriti Sangsad, said that the BNP leader Abdus Salam Khan played prominent role for organising the party, and we must follow his ideals to organise the party.
Central leader of the BNP, Abdus Salam, said that Salam Talukder was an honest politician who organised the party, and during his tenure as party secretary general, BNP had gone in power after the fall of autocratic ruler HM Ershad in 1990.
Former member of the parliament and central leader of the organisation, Afzal H Khan, said that Salam Taluder had made huge sacrifices for organising the BNP.
Lawyer ASM Abdul Halim, BNP central leaders M Rashiduzzaman Millat, Sirajul Haque, Sultan Salauddin Tiku, Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, journalist leader Abdul Hye Sikder, among others, spoke at the commemoration meeting.
