A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Saturday placed main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia鈥檚 adviser Forhad Halim Doner on one-day remand in a violence case.

Besides, the court sent five people including BNP joint secretary general Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, BNP leader SM Jahangir,聽 and former BRAC university teacher Asif Mahtab, to jail, but it granted bail to Jahangirnagar University student Arif Sohel.


Magistrate Shanto Islam Mollik placed BNP leader Forhad Halim Doner on one-day remand rejecting his bail petition in a case filed with the Cantonment police station after the detective branch of police produced him before the court seeking 10-day remand.

Besides, metropolitan magistrate Ataullah sent BNP leaders Annie, Gulam Dastigir Prince, and ABM Khalid Hasan to jail on completion of their seven-day remand in a case filed with the Rampura police station over setting fire to the Bangladesh Television building.

The court also sent BNP leader SM Jahangir and party vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu鈥檚 son Omar Sharif, to jail on completion of their five-day remand in a case filed with the Kafrul police station over setting fire to Kazipara metro station.

Besides, metropolitan magistrate Shanto Islam Mollik granted bail to Arif Sohel, a student of Jahangirnagar University and one of the coordinators of the quota reform movement, in a case filed over vandalising and setting Setu Bhaban on fire on July 18.

The court, however, rejected the bail petition of former BRAC University lecturer Asif Mahtab Utsha and sent him to jail in the same case.
