Bangladesh Navy’s Rinky Biswas set a new national record in the women’s 10,000-metre following her records in the 3,000-metre and 5,000-metre races as the three-day-long National Summer Athletics Championships concluded at the National Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.

Bangladesh Army emerged champions in the competition with 62 medals – 26 gold, 21silver, and 15 bronze – followed by Navy with 41 medals – 13 gold, 16 silver, and 12 bronze.

A total of seven new national records were made, including three new national records on the final day.

Rinky clocked 39:14:50 seconds to cross the distance and break the previous record of 41:09:32 seconds made by the Army’s Papia Khatun in December 2022.

The runner from Lohagara, Narail, on Saturday clocked 10:27.60 seconds to cross the 3,000m distance to break her previous record of 10:43:30 seconds, created in 2021.

The 20-year-old Rinky also set a new national record in the women’s 5,000m race, clocking 18:20 seconds on the opening day of the meet, breaking the previous record of 18:49:31 seconds set by her team-mate Shamsunnahar Ratna in 2024.

Apart from three records, Rinky, daughter of a fisherman, won gold in the women’s 1,500-metre race, clocking 4:48.04 seconds.

Since 2018, Rinky has set five records in the long-distance race and bagged 18 gold medals on the national stage.

‘I had been working hard for the last six months, and I was confident that my hard work would pay off. Finally, I won four gold medals with three record timings,’ Rinky told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· when she was asked about her achievements in this year’s competition.

However, the fastest man in the country, Imranur Rahman, had to leave the track, suffering a hamstring injury in the middle of the men’s 200-metre sprint event, as army’s Tariq Rahman clocked 22.04 seconds to win gold in the event.

‘This is my first gold in the 200-metre event, and I managed it in my second attempt… Now, I will take preparation for the 2026 South Asian Games,’ said Tariq.

Imranur, who reclaimed the title of the country’s fastest man upon his return to the track after a year-long break at the meet on Friday, struggled to even cross 30-metre  before aggravating the injury he had been carrying in the lead-up to the 2024 Olympics.

In the women’s 200-metre event, Army’s Sharifa Khatun clocked 25.24 seconds to dethrone Navy sprinter Shirin Akter, a 16-time fastest woman of the country.

‘This is my first gold in the 200-metre since I started to take part at the national meet in 2018. I never imagined winning gold in this event. I always finished behind Shirin apu [Akter] in this event,’ said an overwhelmed Sharifa.

Army’s Jannatul set a new national record by crossing 12.49 metres in the triple jump event breaking the previous record of 12.38 metres made by Sonia Akhter.

Sourav Mia of Army set a new national record in the pole vault event by clearing 4.51 metres to break the previous record of 4.50-metre held by Shaon Mia.
