Eminent Lalon singer Farida Parveen’s health condition became critical on Monday.

She was admitted to the intensive care unit of Universal Medical College Hospital at Mohakhali in the capital Dhaka on September 2 when she came to the hospital for dialysis.

‘Farida Parveen has been in the intensive care unit since September 2, but her condition has become critical today [Monday],’ said Asish Chakroborty, managing director of Universal Medical College Hospital.

‘She suffered a brain seizure, which also caused internal bleeding. We need to do some necessary tests, but due to her lack of physical fitness, we could not do it,’ Asish, also a physician, said, adding that she might need life support as part of treatment.

Earlier in July, Farida Parveen received treatment in the ICU at the same hospital for a few days. The hospital then formed a 10-member medical board for Farida Parveen who was suffering from a number of diseases.

Farida Parveen’s elder son Imam Nimeri Upal said that when Farida Parveen fell sick again, she stayed at home, but when she came for dialysis and a regular check-up to the hospital, the doctor concerned admitted her to the hospital.

Farida Parveen was born on December 31, 1954, at Shawl village under Singra upazila in Natore.

Given her outstanding contribution to popularising the Lalon songs, Farida Parveen won, among others, the Ekushey Padak in 1987, the National Film Award for best female playback singer in 1993 and the Fukuoka Prize from Japan in 2008.
