
Pro-vice-chancellor for research and development of Bangladesh Medical University, Professor Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Hawlader, at a rally in Dhaka on Thursday said that awareness should be spread at the school level to prevent thalassaemia.
‘Prevention measures, including making the people aware of leukaemia, must be implemented. Awareness should be spread at the school level to prevent this disease,’ said Mujibur Rahman Hawlader while inaugurating the rally organised to mark the World Thalassaemia Day 2025 on the BMU campus, said a press release.
Mentioning that research on blood diseases has been accelerated at Bangladesh Medical University, he said, ‘The process of starting a bone marrow transplant centre has come a long way. This issue has already been passed by the ECNEC.’
‘If BMT is fully introduced, many patients with blood diseases will not have to go abroad for treatment,’ added Professor Mujibur Rahman.
Bangladesh Medical University celebrated the World Thalassaemia Day with the theme together for thalassemia uniting communities, prioritising patients.
Treasurer Professor Dr Nahrin Akhtar, dean of the faculty of children Professor Dr Md Atiar Rahman were present as the special guests at the rally, which was presided over by Paediatric Haematology and Oncology department chairman Professor Dr Md Anwarul Karim,
Nahrin Akhtar said that to prevent this disease, it was necessary to stop marriages between two carriers of thalassaemia. ‘It is possible to identify carriers of thalassaemia through screening. Above all, proper, improved and easy medical care must be ensured for all thalassaemia patients.’
Anowarul Karim said that the new ray of hope in the treatment of thalassaemia patients was that along with blood, medical care had started for patients with medicines. ‘It is possible to treat these patients with medicines and the expected results are being obtained.’
Teachers, doctors, residents and nurses from various departments of the BMU, including the department of paediatric haematology and oncology, department of transfusion medicine, were present at the rally. Leaders of the Haematology Society of Bangladesh also participated in the rally.
