The Algerian Embassy in Bangladesh on Friday observed the 64th anniversary of the October 17, 1961 massacres, under the theme ‘Cohesion and Commitment’ in the Dhaka city.

Officially recognized as Algeria’s National Emigration Day since 2021, the day was commemorated by the embassy, remembering the courage and sacrifices of Algerians who fought against the French colonial oppression.

Addressing the commemoration ceremony at the Algerian Embassy, ambassador Abdelouahab Saidani highlighted the significance of the October 17, 1961 massacres, as over 30,000 Algerians peacefully protested in Paris against a discriminatory curfew and for independence of Algeria, only to face violent repression by the French police, leading to numerous deaths.

He described the massacres as one of the most brutal acts of colonial repressions, highlighting the courage of the Algerian people, which ultimately led to Algeria’s independence.

The diplomat also drew an analogy between the struggles of Algeria and Bangladesh as both the nations fought for freedom. He called for unity to ensure that the tragedies of the past were never repeated, fostering a future built on justice and peace.

The event was attended among others by Islamic scholars, civil society leaders, educators, think tank members, business leaders, journalists and members of the Scouts.

The ceremony began with the raising of the Algerian national flag on the mission premises, followed by a minute of silence in honour of the massacre martyrs. It continued with the recitation of the Holy Quran and a prayer in remembrance of the fallen.
