Bangladesh will be looking to secure a crucial win against hosts and higher-ranked Myanmar in their Group C second match of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon today.
The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30pm Bangladesh Standard Time.
A win for either side will almost guarantee their place in the finals of the tournament in Australia next year after both the teams won their first games.
Bangladesh thrashed Bahrain 7-0, while Myanmar crushed Turkmenistan 8-0 in their group openers on Sunday.
But Bangladesh coach Peter Butler warned his charges not to be too complacent against a team, Myanmar, 55th, who are 73 places above Bangladesh in current FIFA rankings.Ìý
‘We've got a really, really good work ethic within the camp, and the girls applied themselves brilliantly... But Myanmar will be a completely different challenge. They are perhaps technically better than us and will have the support of the home crowd, but we will be ready for the challenge,’ said Butler.
Bangladesh forward Shaheda Akter Ripa was also cautious while talking to the press on Tuesday.Ìý
‘We will try hard to win the match tomorrow [Wednesday]. If we can do that, it will improve our qualification chances,’ said Ripa.
Only the team that finishes at the top of the group will qualify for the finals of the tournament.Ìý
Currently, Myanmar holds the top position, benefiting from a superior goal difference, while Bangladesh are in second place in the four-team table.
Turkmenistan's and Bahrain's defeats on the opening day mean that both teams must secure victories in their matches today to remain in contention for qualification.
The group champions will join defending champions China, Korea Republic, and Japan in the finals. Bangladesh’s next match is against 141st-ranked Turkmenistan on July 5.
