Abahani Limited finished as runners-up of this season’s Bangladesh Premier League after a 3-0 win over Brothers Union in their final game of the league at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla on Tuesday.

Defender Assaduzzaman Bablu (24th), Brazilian midfielder Raphael Augusto (51st) and forward Mirajul Islam (86th) scored once each, helping six-time champions Abahani end seven points behind champions Mohammedan Sporting Club.


Five-time winners and last edition’s champions Bashundhara Kings finished in third place following their 5-3 win over relegated Dhaka Wanderers Club in the day’s other match at the Kings Arena in the city.

First-time winners Mohammedan ended their campaign on a high with a crushing 6-1 win over Fakirerpool Young Men’s Club at the Shaheed Barkat Stadium in Gazipur.

While, Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society beat Police Football Club 4-1 at the Birshreshtha Flight Lt Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj as eight among 10 teams completed their campaign on Tuesday.

On completion of the 18 round games, Mohammedan (42 points), Abahani (35 points) and Kings (32 points) finished in the top three places, respectively.

Rahmatganj (30 points), Brothers (27 points) and Police FC (27 points) grabbed the next three places –from fourth to sixth – respectively.

Fortis Football Club, seventh on the table with 24 points, have a chance to move to sixth if they beat relegated and bottom-placed Chittagong Abahani in the final game of the season on Thursday.

Fakirerpool (19 points) escaped relegation earlier, while Wanderers (10 points) faced Ctg Abahani’s fate.

Bangladesh Championship League champions Public Works Department Sports Club and runners-up Arambagh Krira Sangha will play in next season’s BPL.
