The flood situation in the north-east is set to worsen over the weekend with the ongoing wet spell picking up with heavy to very heavy rainfall continuing inside the country and increasing in its upstream in parts of north-eastern India.

After the early hours of Wednesday, however, the Sylhet district saw a pause in rainfall when the floodwater receded from parts of the city, but the district鈥檚 rural parts saw flooding spread to new areas.

The flashflood in Sylhet, which already hit 10 upazilas out of total 13 affecting over a million people, continued for a week on Wednesday though such floods caused by heavy rains do not usually stay more than a day, reported 抖阴精品 correspondent in Sylhet.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department in its weather bulletin issued at 6:00pm on Wednesday said that the northern region inside the country might keep receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days.

The India Meteorological Department expected heavy rainfall in the north-east due to a cyclonic circulation over Nagaland and strong southerly winds from the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD expected very heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya on Friday and Saturday.

Major rivers in northern region also swelled significantly following heavy rainfall in its upstream.

Local people organised a human chain demanding embankments to protect them against flood.

Vast swathes of cropfields with sweet pumpkin, maize and vegetable crops were inundated in the flood.

Water Development Board executive engineer in Dalia Asfauddulla said that the Teesta River was flowing 115cm below the danger level on Tuesday afternoon. The river could overflow its bank in a matter of hours.
