The authorities of City University and Daffodil International University on Wednesday filed separate cases with Savar police station accusing students of each other over the Sunday’s clash over a trivial matter.
The case filed by City University accused over 1,000 unnamed students of Daffodil International University and that by DIU accused 250 students of City University.
The five-hour clash that began at about 9:00pm on Sunday left at least 200 injured, vehicles torched and City University’s office rooms vandalised.
City University registrar Professor Mir Akhtar Hossain filed a case accusing over 1,000 unnamed Daffodil students and one identified as Fahad of carrying out attacks, arson, and looting on the City University campus.
The complaint also alleged that Daffodil officials had instigated and aided the violence.
The case statement claimed that the attackers, armed with crude and petrol bombs, stormed into the campus, set fire to vehicles, including university buses, vandalised administrative offices, and looted valuables worth about Tk 20 crore.
The other case was filed by DIU assistant administrative officer Aftab Uddin Ahmed Khan, accusing around 250 unidentified City University students of attacking the private hostel ‘Bachelor Paradise,’ where Daffodil students reside.
The complaint alleged that the attackers vandalised property, injured students, and later detained 11 students at gunpoint, kept them confined overnight and forced them to make confessions and false statements while in confinement.
Savar police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Jewel Mia said that they recorded both cases and were investigating them.
Dhaka additional superintendent of police (Savar circle) Asaduzzaman said that they would take action as per findings in the investigation.
The University Grants Commission probe committee visited the City University campus on Wednesday to assess the damage.
National University pro-vice-chancellor Professor Nurul Islam, who is leading the six-member UGC inquiry committee, said, ‘We are investigating to find out the reasons behind this unfortunate incident and to determine the extent of the losses.’
The clash erupted Sunday evening after an altercation between students of both universities over a minor incident near the Bachelor Paradise hostel, where a City University student allegedly spat near a Daffodil student.
The dispute escalated into a brawl, with City students reportedly attacking the hostel with sticks and bricks.
In retaliation, Daffodil students stormed the City University campus later that night, torching three buses and a private car, and vandalising administrative offices, vehicles, and classrooms.Â
