The long-awaited elections to the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union and hall unions will be held on Wednesday after 35 years, amid tight security.
The CUCSU election commission began sending ballot boxes to the polling centres Tuesday morning.
By noon, ballot boxes had reached all centres, chief election commissioner professor Monir Uddin said.
The five polling venues are the IT Building and the buildings of the faculties of arts and humanities, science, social science, and business administration.
Voting will take place in around 700 booths set up across 60 rooms in these buildings.
A separate polling centre has been arranged on the second floor of the CUCSU building for visually impaired students, where two election commissioners will supervise the process.
Professor Monir Uddin said that the ballot papers would be sent to the centres before beginning the voting on Wednesday morning.
According to election officials, students will cast their votes on OMR ballot sheets, four pages for CUCSU posts and one page for the hall and hostel unions.
Voting will begin at 9:00am and continue until 4:00pm without any break.
A total of 27,516 students, including 16,084 males and 11,329 females, were registered to exercise their voting rights.
According to the CUCSU election commission, 908 candidates from 13 panels and independent groups are contesting in the polls.
Of them, 415 candidates are running for 26 central posts, while 493 are contesting for posts in 14 hall unions.
There are 24 candidates for the post of vice-president in CUCSU, 22 for general secretary, and 21 for assistant general secretary.
Law enforcement agencies have deployed nearly 1,000 members across the campus to maintain order. Alongside police and Rapid Action Battalion personnel, plainclothes intelligence teams are patrolling in the area.
Border Guard Bangladesh, Armed Police Battalion, and executive magistrates will also be on duty during polling, with mobile courts operating at each faculty building.
