The authorities of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur on Tuesday suspended eight students in connection with a clash between students of three departments of the university.

The suspension decision was announced by BRUR vice-chancellor professor Md Showkat Ali following an emergency meeting of the university’s disciplinary committee, held in the early hours of Tuesday.


A five-member investigation committee was also formed to probe the incident further and asked to submit the report soon.

The students suspended are Safayet Hossain, Shahriar Apu, Sojib, Sourav, Nazmus Sakib, Rohan Sarkar, Jihad from the marketing department (2023-24 session) and Ashraful Islam from the same department (2021-22 session).

According to university sources, there was a scuffle between Shahriar Apu, a student of the 16th batch of the marketing department, and others during a recent football match. Although the matter was initially resolved, at about 8:30pm on Monday night a group of marketing students assaulted a statistics student in Chawk Bazar area just outside the university campus, triggering unrest on the campus.

After 9:00pm, a group of students of the statistics and physics departments started chanting slogans on the campus. A group of students of the marketing department forcibly entered the sociology department and vandalised the facilities. Later they got into a clash with the statistics and physics departments’ students, leaving at least four injured.

In the light of the seriousness of the situation, the university disciplinary committee convened an emergency meeting at about 3:30am on Tuesday, resulting in the suspension of the students involved.

Vice-chancellor Showkat Ali said, ‘We’ve formed a five-member investigation committee to investigate the incident further.’

The committee is headed by student counselling and guidance office director Ilyas Pramanik, with proctor Ferdous Rahman serving as its member secretary, he said.

Further punitive measures will be taken against those involved in the incident after receiving the probe committee’s report, the VC added.     Â
