
Speakers at a seminar on Friday said that the National Curriculum and Textbook Board failed to properly incorporate the 2024 July uprising spirit in the newly revised textbooks.
Organised by Sikkha Odhikar Sangsad, the seminar titled Review of the 1924 Uprising in 2025 Academic Year Textbooks was held on Friday in Dr Abdullah Farooq Conference Room of the Faculty of Business Studies at Dhaka University.
At the event, speakers expressed concerns over the lack of reflection on the July uprising, distortion of historical facts, questionable and low quality images, irrelevant book covers, and inadequately presented contents in the textbooks.
From the seminar Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, spokesperson for Inquilab Mancha, said, ‘The interim government should have allowed broader participation in the textbook development process, which they failed to do.’
Faisal Mahmud Shanto, Education and Research Cell secretary of the National Citizens’ Committee, said, ‘Those involved in developing textbooks treat students like guinea pigs.’
Dr Atique Mujahid, Joint Convener of the National Citizens’ Committee, said, “If we fail to present the narrative properly for individuals like Abu Saeed, Mughda, Sajid, and Anas, it marks a national failure.’
Dr Moninur Rashid, a professor at the Institute of Education and Research, Dhaka University, and a member of the National Curriculum Committee, said, ‘It seems the government is neglecting education. A curriculum committee for the next year should have been formed by December, but it hasn’t been done yet.’
The seminar was also attended, among others, by professor Syeda Sultana Razia of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and a member of the Curriculum Coordination Committee and Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, Faisal Mahmud Shanto, Sanjida Khan Dipti, mother of martyr Shahriar Khan Anas; Farzana Haque, sister of martyr Ikramul Haque Sajid; and Saurav Fahim, convener of the July Revolution Council.
The seminar was chaired by professor Niaz Asadullah, the convener of the Education Rights Parliament and Professorial Fellow at North South University.
A review of 2025 academic year textbooks was presented by Md Shahnawaz Khan Chandan, the member secretary of the Education Rights Parliament and an assistant professor at the Institute of Education and Research at Jagannath University.
