Students and guardians at a rally on Friday protested at the cancellation of postponed Higher Secondary Certificate examinations.
They demanded that the education ministry should hold those remaining HSC examinations that were postponed following the student-led mass uprising at different times from July 18 to August 10.
The rally was organised by the educational organisation Shishir: Shikkha O Shishu Rakkha Andolan in front of the Bangladesh National Museum at Shahbagh in Dhaka.
Mir Tasfiya Musarrath, an HSC examinee from Mohammadpur Mohila College, said that cancellation of the examinations would lead the students to a complex situation.
There is no alternative but to hold the remaining examinations for the future of students, added Tasfiya.
Dhaka University Bangla department professor Mohammad Azam criticised the authorities for taking the decision in a hurry without discussing the matters with stakeholders and thinking about the consequences.
‘The previous government made the education sector vulnerable and made a mockery of examinations. The examination cancellation decision cannot be supported,’ added the professor.
Dina Tazrin, a guardian and teacher, said that there were many HSC examinees in the movement and became victims of excessive use of force.
‘Students sacrificed much in the movement for establishing the priority of merit. Cancellation of the examinations will make the spirit of the movement questionable,’ said Dina.
She also urged the authorities to consider the decision and to hold the remaining examinations with special arrangements for injured and oppressed students.
Not all the HSC examinees demanded cancellation of the examinations, Rakhal Raha, the convener of Shishir, said, adding that many of the students were disappointed at such a decision.
He also announced that they would meet the government to discuss the matter on Sunday.        Â
In the face of agitation by a group of students, the postponed HSC and equivalent examinations were cancelled on August 20 by the interim government formed after a student-led mass uprising that forced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India.
