The Bangladesh Cricket Board formally handed over responsibility for its forthcoming elections to the Election Commission on Saturday.
BCB media committee chairman Iftekhar Rahman Mithu confirmed the latest development to the media at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
‘Our board elections will be held in October, and there is a set process that we follow for that. Today’s meeting was only about that process. As you know, the three members of the Election Commission have already been announced and they have assumed their responsibilities,’ Mithu said.
Mithu said the commission would announce the detailed schedule soon. ‘They have already met once and will sit again. Once they finalise it, we will make it public,’ he added.
Asked about potential election panels, Mithu responded. ‘Whether there will be panels or not — I don’t know yet. You will find out soon enough. As of now, no panel has been formed. First, the councillor papers need to be submitted. Then we will see… If no one wants me, I cannot stay. That’s the scenario.’
Mithu, long associated with the board’s club category, confirmed that if he contests, it would be from the same category.
‘I have always been in the club category, and if I do contest, it will be from the club category.’
Meanwhile, former cricketer Debabrata Paul announced his candidacy from Category C of the BCB constitution.
Paul, who has been involved with the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh, visited BCB headquarters and met with president Aminul Islam Bulbul before declaring his intention to run.
Women’s cricket clubs also grabbed attention on Saturday as they staged their second protest this month in front of the BCB headquarters, demanding representation on the board through a dedicated councillorship. They also shared their demands and views with the media.
