A group of Rajshahi University students on Saturday blocked the Dhaka–Rajshahi railway tracks near the university station, demanding postponement of the 47th BCS written examinations and protesting against police attacks on demonstrators in Dhaka.

The blockade brought rail communication between Rajshahi and the rest of the country to a standstill.

Witnesses said around 100 students gathered at the university railway station at about 3:30pm, burned their admit cards and gathered on the tracks to press home their demands.

Mahbub Alam, a student of applied chemistry and chemical engineering, said that the Public Service Commission had left them with no choice but to take to the streets.

‘Why are we being given only two months when others get six? This is clear discrimination. We strongly condemn the police brutality on our fellow students in Dhaka. We will continue the movement until our demand is met,’ he said.

Another student, Anika of the agriculture faculty, said that even different student organisations had acknowledged the students’ demand as legitimate.

‘Finishing the written exam syllabus in two months is impossible. Our brothers are on hunger strike, yet no solution has been offered. The exam date must be shifted to a reasonable time,’ she said.

Ziaul Hasan, station manager of Rajshahi Railway Station, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the blockade left the Dhaka-bound Padma Express, scheduled for 4:00pm, and the Pabna-bound Dhalarchar Express, scheduled for 5:20pm, stranded at the station.

‘The trains will be able to depart only after the students lift the blockade,’ he said.
