Jahangirnagar University on Thursday observed World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week with a rally and seminar aimed at highlighting the growing risks linked to antibiotic misuse.
The faculty of biological sciences organised the day-long programme, which began with a colourful rally starting from the Wazed Miah Science Research Centre and ending at the university’s central Shaheed Minar.
A seminar followed at the research centre.
JU vice-chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan attended the event as chief guest, while pro-vice-chancellor Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman attended as special guest.
While addressing the audience, dean of the faculty of biological sciences Mafruhi Satter expressed concern over widespread misconceptions about antibiotic use as it increasing the threat of resistance.
Mafruhi Satter—a professor of JU pharmacy department, said many people turn to antibiotics at the onset of minor ailments, raising the risk of drug resistance.
He urged the public to avoid taking antibiotics without medical advice and called on doctors to exercise greater caution in prescribing them.
Professor Mahbub Hossain of mathematics and natural sciences department at BRAC University presented the keynote paper at the event.
Teachers and students from various departments joined the observance.
