Law enforcement agencies have beefed up security in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country as arson and crude bomb attacks continued at places on Wednesday, ahead of the possible announcement today of the date for delivering the verdict in a crimes against humanity case against ousted prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.
The incidents occurred days after the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, announced a ‘Dhaka Lockdown’ on social media for today, the day the International Crimes Tribunal is scheduled to set the date for delivering its verdict in the case over atrocities committed across the country during the July uprising. The Hasina-led Awami League regime was ousted from power amid the uprising on August 5, 2024.
Besides the deployment of army troops in aid of the civil administration since Hasina’s fall, the interim government on Wednesday deployed 14 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh in Dhaka and adjoining districts to maintain law and order amid incidents ofarson and crude bomb attacks in the capital and several other districts.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court administration sent a letter to the Army headquarters, requesting army deployment on the court compound, SC public relations officer Shafiqul Islam said.
Several buses were set ablaze in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country since Monday and a series of crude bombs were also exploded, creating panic among the city dwellers.
Fear and panic spread among the public and less traffic was seen on the city streets on Wednesday as more buses were set on fire, crude bombs were exploded near several offices and educational institutions in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
However, no casualties have so far been reported in these incidents, according to the police.
Meanwhile, different primary to tertiary level educational institutions are scheduled to hold online classes today and defer examinations to tomorrow, mentioning ‘unavoidable reasons’.
Many parents also said that they would not send their children to school today.
The authorities of East West University have decided to hold all classes through online platforms in November 12-13, while the authorities of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology deferred all examinations that were scheduled to be held on 12-13 November.
Educational institutions, including South Point School and College, deferred all examinations from today to tomorrow.
Unidentified miscreants exploded two crude bombs at the Teacher-Student Centre of Dhaka University at about 9:30pm on Wednesday.
In Gazipur, unidentified miscreants set fire to three buses at two different locations early Wednesday, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in the district reported.
The first incident occurred when a group of unidentified people torched a bus parked on Dhaka–Tangail highway near Peyarabagan area of Bhogra Bypass.
Around the same time, another group set fire to a minibus in the Beraid Chala area of Sreepur upazila of the district.
In Ashulia, unidentified miscreants set fire to a parked bus in the Narsinghpur area.
Abu Kalam, a night guard who saw the incident, said that three or four miscreants set fire to a bus of ‘Alif Transport’ near the Women and Children Hospital at dawn and fled the scene.
Ashulia police station officer-in-charge Abdul Hannan said that efforts were underway to detain those involved in the incident. In Dhaka, two buses caught fire at Mirpur and Dholaipar, where the fire service officials said that the cause of the fire could not be confirmed immediately.
Two crude bombs exploded at Hasnabad in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka, at about 1:00am on Wednesday in front of the As-Sunnah Hall, a male student dormitory affiliated with Jagannath University, JnU correspondent reported.
Law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area and launched an investigation into the incident.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner for Tejgaon Division, Mohammad Ibne Mizan, said that two petrol bombs were hurled at Mohammadpur Preparatory School and College on Iqbal Road at about 12:00am.
The police seized four crude bombs from inside the compound of the Election Commission Secretariat at Agargaon in Dhaka on the day, Bangladesh Sangbad Sanstha reported.
Police seized the crude bombs from the garden of the EC Secretariat around 11 am today, Sher-e-Banglanagar police station officer-in-charge Emaul Haque said.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Gazipur reported that unidentified miscreants on early Wednesday allegedly threw two ‘Molotov cocktails’ at Nisarga Resort of the Grameen Telecom Trust in Gazipur.
Later, police recovered the unexploded ‘Molotov cocktails’ from the resort, said Ulukhola police camp in-charge Jamal Uddin, adding that legal action is being taken in the incident.
Chief adviser Muhammad Yunus is the chairman and managing trustee of the Grameen Telecom Trust.
Miscreants set fire to a branch of Grameen Bank at Amtali in Bijoynagar upazila of Brahmanbaria district at about 2:00am on Wednesday, United News of Bangladesh reported.
Meanwhile, members of the law enforcement agencies have conducted overnight raids in different hotels and shared accommodations as the Awami League leaders and activists head to the capital for the protest, according to law enforcers.
The Detective Branch of the DMP arrested 44 more leaders and activists of the AL and its affiliated organisations from different parts of Dhaka in 24 hours for bringing out flash processions, said a DMP press release issued at about 6:00pm on Wednesday. Â
The Rapid Action Battallion -2 recovered six abandoned crud bombs and four Molotov cocktails from Rayerbazar graveyard in the capital’s Mohammadpur area, said a RAB-2 press release.
Earlier, a driver of a bus was burnt to death as unidentified miscreants set fire to the bus in the Bhalukjan area under Phulbaria upazila in Mymensingh early Tuesday.
On early Tuesday, Julhas, a driver of Alam Asia Paribahan, was burnt to death inside his parked bus as unidentified miscreants set fire to the bus at about 3:15am in the Bhalukjan area under Phulbaria upazila in Mymensingh.
