A fire broke out at the official residence of Meherpur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Monjur Ahmed Siddiqui on Wednesday afternoon, causing significant damage but no injuries.
The blaze erupted around 4:00pm in the Court Mor area, with thick smoke quickly attracting the attention of neighbours, who immediately raised the alarm.
Three units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived at the scene and managed to bring the fire under control within an hour.
Meherpur Fire Service deputy director Sakria Haider stated that the fire likely started due to an explosion in the air conditioning unit, with initial indications pointing to an electrical fault.
The dining area was heavily damaged, with furniture, a refrigerator, tables, and chairs destroyed. The total loss is still being assessed, Haider added.
SP Siddiqui was not at home when the fire started.
‘I returned to find the house engulfed in flames. Thanks to the prompt response, we were able to avoid a greater tragedy,’ he said.
A police investigation team has been formed, and security at the residence has been increased, he added.
