A speedy trial tribunal in Rajshahi on Tuesday sentenced a headmaster of a secondary school to life term rigorous imprisonment for abducting and raping an SSC examinee in Natore in 2022.
Judge Md Mohiduzzaman of the Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict against Firoz Ahmed, 45, the headmaster of Mariam Memorial Girls’ High School under Gurudaspur upazila in Natore, said public prosecutor Munshi Abul Kalam Azad.
He said that the tribunal sentenced Firoz to life-term imprisonment for raping the student and another 14 years’ imprisonment for abducting the girl.
The tribunal also fined the convict Tk 20,000, he added.
According to the case statement, Firoz Ahmed, also a former vice-president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Gurudaspur upazila unit, developed a relationship with one of his students under false promises.
On October 1, 2022, after the completion of her SSC practical examination, Firoz allegedly lured her with a promise of better marks, forced her into a microbus and took her to Rajshahi.
There, he confined her in a house and raped her several times, threatening her to remain silent.
Witnesses who saw the abduction informed the girl’s family, who later filed a case with Gurudaspur police under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, naming Firoz Ahmed and two others as accused.
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion later arrested Firoz from Kaliakoir in Gazipur.
After the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against the three accused. The tribunal later discharged the two other suspects and began the trial against Firoz alone.
