Temporary and daily wage workers of Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority on Tuesday formed a human chain, demanding regularisation of their jobs in line with a High Court directive.

Under the banner of Rajshahi WASA Employees’ Union they formed the hour-long human chain in front of the WASA office at Uposhohor in Rajshahi city to press home their demand.

The workers at the programme demanded immediate steps to regularise all master roll and temporary workers as they had been providing their services for over 10 to 20 years.

They said that low wages and irregular payments had made it difficult for them to meet daily expenses amid soaring living costs.

‘With what we are paid we can hardly run our families, bear medical expenses, or educate our children,’ said worker Abdul Mannan.

The union’s president Safiqul Alam said that although permanent workers of other WASAs received different retirement facilities including pension, they did not get any of these.

The workers also warned of a tougher movement if their demands were not met.

Among others, the union’s advisers Nasim Khan and Azizul Islam, general secretary Iqbal Hossain, joint-general secretary Al-Amin Kajol, organising secretary Md Jony, and publicity affairs secretary Zainal Abedin spoke at the human chain.
