Journalists of Khulna on Sunday demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the attack on two Amar Desh reporters.
Two journalists of the daily Amar Desh were attacked on Saturday last at Shibbari area in Khulna.
The injured are Ehteshamul Haque Shawon, assistant general secretary of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and Khulna bureau chief of Amar Desh, and staff reporter Kamrul Hossain Moni.
A protest rally was organised by the Metropolitan Union of Journalists Khulna chapter in front of Khulna Press Club.
Speakers at the rally alleged that the law and order in Khulna city deteriorated due to administrative negligence and police inaction.
The attackers assaulted two professional journalists in broad daylight in the city centre. But, none was arrested even after 24 hours, they said.
MUJ’s acting general secretary Abul Hasan Himalay presided over the rally while Treasurer Abdur Razzak Rana conducted it.
SM Shafiqul Alam Mona, member of the BNP national executive committee and president of Khulna city BNP, Professor Mahfuzur Rahman, central Majlish-e-Shura member of Jamaat-e-Islami and amir of Khulna city, Md Moniruzzaman Montu, convener of Khulna district BNP, Shafiqul Alam Tuhin, general secretary of Khulna city BNP, Sheikh Jahangir Hossain Helal, secretary of Khulna city Jamaat, Enamul Haque and Rafiul Islam Tutul, convenor and member secretary of Khulna Press Club respectively, and Mizanur Rahman Milton, general secretary of Khulna Newspaper Council also spoke.
Former BFUJ vice-president Rashidul Islam, Sheikh Didarul Alam, HM Alauddin, Sheikh Nasir Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Ahmad Hamim Rahat of the July 36 Movement, Sheikh Zakirul Islam, Mostafa Jamal Poplu, Muhammad Nuruzzaman, Sohrab Hossain, Ashraful Islam Nur, Anowarul Islam Kajol, Zahidul Islam, Nazmul Haque Pappu, Neyamul Hossain Kochi, Anisur Rahman Kabir, Abdul Khalek Azizi, Md Ershad Ali, KM Ziaus Sadat, Mahbubur Rahman Munna, and researcher Sayek Ali Hakim, among others, present.
Leaders of various political and social organisations, including CPB’s former city president Mizanur Rahman Babu, Ganosamhati Andolon’s city coordinator Munir Chowdhury Sohel, BJP’s Siraj Uddin Sintu, BNP’s Sher Alam Santu, and SM Sohorab also expressed solidarity with the journalists’ demands.
