Gold ornaments and cash were stolen from nearly 150-year-old Sadarghat Kali Temple under the Kotwali police station in Chattogram city early Sunday.

Sana Bhattacharjee, a member of the temple’s caretaker family, said that the stolen items, taken from the Goddess Kali idol, included a gold and a silver crown each weighing about four bharis, a pair of earrings, a gold locket with chain weighing about two bharis, a silver necklace weighing four bharis, and a small gold locket weighing four anas.

As the donation box was broken open and cash was stolen, he estimated that the box contained Tk 60,000 to Tk 70,000, collected from devotees over the past few days.

‘We discovered the theft at about 7:00am, immediately after the temple doors were unlocked,’ said Sana.

‘As the main gate was locked as usual, we suspect that one or more thieves entered the temple through the ventilator by climbing onto the roof,’ he added. ‘Police visited the spot and no CCTV cameras were found inside the temple,’ Kotwali police officer-in-charge Abdul Karim said.

‘We are checking footage from nearby roads and adjacent areas as drives are under way to recover the stolen gold and cash,’ he added.
