Leaders of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh at a rally in Dhaka on Friday called on the interim government to take steps for holding the next general election in February for democratic transition of the country.
They also said that some political forces were trying to delay the election, which would resist the democratic transition and worsen the political situation of the country.
The SPB leaders called on all the democratic political parties to be united to resist the undemocratic political forces.
Chaired by general secretary of the party Bazlur Rashid Firoz, the SPB organised the rally in front of the National Press Club to mark the 45th founding anniversary of the party and the 108th anniversary of the Russian Socialist Revolution.
Bazlur Rahman Firoz said that the interim government had failed to implement the spirits of the July uprising in the past 14 months.
‘So, holding next general election in a free, fair and democratic manner is essential for the democratic transition of the country,’ Bazlur Rashid said.
Mentioning that some undemocratic political parties are trying to delay the election, he called on all the left and democratic political parties to resist the forces who were trying to delay the election.
Assistant general secretary of the party Razequzzaman Ratan said that the interim government had failed to implement the spirits of the July uprising to form a discrimination free society.
Mentioning that the interim government has failed to stop corruption and mob violence and to restore law and order of the country, Ratan said, ‘Moreover, they are going to lease out operations of Chattogram and other two ports to the foreign companies, which are contrary to the national interests of the country.’Â
There is no alternative to holding the general election in February, mentioned SPB central leader Nikhil Das, adding, ‘People of the country are eagerly waiting for early democratic transition of the country.’
Anther central leader Zulfiqur Ali called on all the left political parties to take part in the next general election.
The rally was followed by a red flag procession that paraded different city roads, including Purana Paltan and Gulistan.
