The police on Tuesday night arrested a former leader of band student body Bangladesh Chhatra League with firearms and ammunition in Chattogram city’s Agrabad area.
The arrested Mostafa Kamal Tipu, 49, is named in multiple murder cases and was allegedly involved in firing on students and protesters during the student-led July Uprising, police officials said.
Double Mooring police officer-in-charge Md Babul Azad said, ‘Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a raid at Ayan Enterprise, Tipu’s office on the sixth floor of Bashar Square in the city’s Agrabad commercial area, at about 8:30pm on Tuesday and arrested him.’
‘We recovered a locally made double-barrel gun, 56 rounds of ammunition of different foreign brands, including 32 Auto CBC, GECO 7.65 Browning and KF 9mm, four 12-bore cartridges, one rubber cartridge, six cleaning rods, an HP laptop, and a white Nissan private car used in criminal activities,’ he added.
‘The firearms were found hidden above the office ceiling, while the ammunition and other materials were recovered from a drawer and nearby areas,’ he further added.
Police suspect that the weapons were used during the July 2024 protests and later kept concealed in the office.
A case was filed under the Arms Act 1878 with the Double Mooring model police station on Wednesday morning in connection with the recovery.
‘The arrestee was sent to jail after being produced before the court today,’ the police officer said.
